Does Oxygenated water, and vitamin and mineral water for sport performance or health improvements work, is it worth your money?
Save your money and buy regular water! First, very little oxygen can be forced into a water bottle, less than contained in one single breath. Second, any contained oxygen in the bottle, of which would be very little would escape once the bottle was opened. Additionally, the very minute amount of oxygen would be absorbed into the cells of the intestinal walls. This would happen before it reached the blood or muscles. 99% of oxygen transported in the blood is chemically bound to hemoglobin (red blood cells contain hemoglobin, which is used for the transport of oxygen) and the oxygen that can be transported is dependent on the concentration of hemoglobin. During intense exercise hemoglobin is approximately 97% saturated with oxygen, meaning there is no or very little room for any more to add if any water had a value to it with oxygen. Further more, numerous studies have assessed the enhancement of maximal amount of oxygen on athletes during consumption of oxygenated water, the results no breathing improvements (VO2 max).
Next, vitamin and mineral water, first there are hundreds of antioxidant compounds, phytochemicals, vitamins and minerals in whole foods that have not/can not be studied single handedly. A variety of whole foods will guarantee many different exposures of antioxidants, vitamin and minerals without sacrificing any unknown ingredients that the vitamin/mineral water does. Additionally, at higher than normal doses it may actually work in reverse by promoting oxidation by stimulating the production of free radicals. Next we will see "drink muscle water or lose fat water"! Eating a variety of fruits, vegetables and whole foods will help guarantee you the variety of healthy vitamins and minerals without any unknown sacrificed nutrients.
